"Web as a Medium" is the title and theme of an exhibition that reconsiders the Web as a primary medium for code-based art. Many NFT works are distributed as images, videos, or code, but for code-based works in particular, the Web browser is not just a display surface: it is the execution environment and, effectively, the canvas. From this perspective, the Web is not merely a place where art is shown, but a condition that makes the work possible.
The theme also frames a historical shift from the early days when the Web was still new and experimental, through the rise of Web 2.0 and NFTs, to the present moment shaped by blockchain platforms. The exhibition asks how works that use the Web as their main expressive medium have evolved across these changes. Earlier practices include the NEEN Manifest, as well as artists and projects including Rafaël Rozendaal, Kim Asendorf, and exonemo, as examples of experiments that explored new, sometimes playful or even "useless," ways of using the Web. It also notes the relationship between Web-based works and NFT minting on Tezos.
In short, the term points to a view of the Web not as a neutral distribution channel, but as the very medium through which the work is constituted.
